So for today, a culinary discovery I made this week, 爽 鱼皮 (shuang yú pí) translation: it will read the article to know; P

It all started when Daisy, my colleague Cantonese shock, invites me Wednesday night on Skype with another colleague, Ben, a native of Qingdao, out tomorrow “eat something special” … So many mysteries, I did not resist this:)
Appointment was made: the day we meet at the subway station 长寿 路 (Chang Shou lu) towards the busy shopping street 上下九 (shàng xià jiǔ) atabler for us to ‘the best thing that prepares special all Canton ‘, dixit Daisy.

A greasy spoon outside, super nice by touffeurs Cantonese May through the fan and other covers subtly suspended. At the corner of the street, between two rows of old houses, the kind of place that if you do not know, do not you think. The card is very simple: 3 courses, including the famous special trick. Let’s go for 3! We wait our plastic stools. During this time, Daisy explains the history of the place. 50 years they would be there, and still re-named for ‘something special’. I also want to take a look at the tables around. Nothing really identifiable. In any case not something that looks like dog tails for example, so with a card 3 courses luck whatsoever that.

Next step of my life in shanghai

A good lesson and a few lessons and perspectives

I cracked, but I think mostly I just take a good and expensive lesson! At every opportunity, always padlocked his scooter, especially in places where one feels most safe!

Some days I have therefore thought. After all these years here without any security incident (or almost), I may eventually overestimate Chinese security: theft exists and is current. My guardian angel may have disappeared in recent months, or simply good fortune can not last forever: I met my first incident of its kind after 7 years in China between Shanghai and Canton.

Probably that’s what it takes to continue to spice up my life here, and feed the blog I’m having lived a long time in China, as I still live this kind of vicissitude without more damage than it I tell myself that I still have things to do here. Good, provided that there is still much more to good adventures misadventures)

I take the position as the independence that I have acquired through my Masters in particular Chinese. Between my last trip to Xinjiang often far from any laowai-friendly environment and this last event, I am surprised myself of the relative ease with which I passed through these experiences that would be a nightmare for any non-Chinese-speaking and are instead a breeze for me.
The effect laowai-who-runs-the-Chinese opens the door and smiles, and finally makes the experience even more rewarding for Chinese. Really, really, every day I thank this crazy idea that I had 9 years ago to start learning the language! She avoids many pitfalls, and even if it does not protect me from all troubles, she knows me the way to their solution much easier to find and fun to cross.

NEW HOME in china

Well there it is, it is high time I show you a little of my new home. So new that it’s because it’s been a month all round as I live So now, after Shanghainese apartment home after home Shanghainese dorm room, this is the latest in the series: the Cantonese in my apartment!

Shanghai Pudong la nuit

As I announced there is not very long, I live in the Tianhe District, the new business district of Guangzhou, to some extent comparable to Shanghai Pudong. If I live in this neighborhood is not so by choice but because this is my office therein, and hours of transit or walking when the weather is 40 ° C in the shadow, I pass well.

So when I arrived there a little over a month in Guangzhou with only a few days before me to find an apartment that I liked before starting to be monopolized by the job, I fell from the sky when I ‘ have seen rents. And yes, in my head, Canton it was still not at Shanghai cost of living in Shanghai is reputed to be the most expensive city in Mainland China (HK which excluded). Guangzhou Tianhe except that, without being Shanghai Pudong, Shanghai Xuhui well worth to rent, and it is certainly not as idyllic as Shanghai Minhang:

Anyway, after we refused the offered me 38m ² to 3,000 yuan per month because of their proximity to the Citic (LE financial center of Canton), I picked up a little further happiness Tianhe Beilu on the side of Longkou Donglu ( = street Maw Dragon is not far from the street Maw Dragon west]) for a small 一房一厅 yi-yi-fang-ting, literally a room-a living room, a 2 bedroom What, with balcony, bathroom and kitchenette. I have been visiting a twenty apartments with 5 different agencies in two days and a half, by sorting the barred windows, construction sites, places too expensive or too bright. ‘ve Unraveled itself (as a leader … I do not know) to negotiate and find something where I could feel good. Therefore the amount of rent (2200 yuan / month) I do not have 70m ² I would have loved, I have a furnished relatively new small but cute, I finally located;)

In addition to my owner is a real cream, focus on costs, contract, Internet, rehabilitation, keys, everything has been arranged in two days that followed my decision made itself the day of my first visit. There’s no time to procrastinate a day or two, it goes 一房一厅 quickly so you have to decide quickly! In my case, supporting previous contract I had for 2200 yuan per month apartment previously sold at 2700 yuan per month. The owner was anxious to go home, in Qinghai. In other words, another advantage (although we will see later), my landlord will not come bothering me every Sunday morning …

Here’s the story, let us therefore presentations. This is the time of the turn of the tenant

That is where you fall when you come through the door: the living room tails, with room in the extension.

Connoisseurs easily identify lack, coffee table and billy, furniture towels, all rights come from IKEA corner.

I have looked elsewhere, but not find happiness. So I claim my inner IKEA typical Chinese

Guangzhou, the south of china

Far left, the pink building, this is where I work. The large tower at the bottom, the Citic, lost in the mist of Canton.
And yes it is a tropical climate and any moisture that goes with it. When I arrived it was about 30 ° C and all the same for the weekend. For info, a week earlier than I was in France it was snowing, and Shanghai the same day about 20 ° C, climate shocks hello:]
On your right, I call them Siamese towers, under construction, and a little closer to the local Times Square. Here for presentations, this is the view I had every morning this week from the office at 5 minutes walk from my hotel, great!

Will now be a little closer to my new home in Tianhe Beilu back on.

Soon we arrive on buildings to give you a torticollis to see the top. Restaurants sanitized, gyms, banks. A Shanghai-Pudong become?
We probably less approaching the famous Citic. Below, seen from the back of the park that is next.

Quite impressive. Surely we’ll talk later …
It continues, some pictures of Guangzhou in bulk.

Meanwhile we arrive at Longkou Xilu 龙口 西路 and Park Megastore, handy supermarket to shop for the week. McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, KFC, Starbucks, they are all, with everything you need to store electronics and furniture. Longkou to Donglu 龙口 东路, stop! this is where I am!

And the view from my balcony …

You will understand, nothing to do with my Minhang Shanghainese. More noise and pollution over the world, Bouis-bouis are much rarer, and when you manage to find them, this is not quite the same price. Casually, if I’m still on the same street as my place of work, it takes me about 30 minutes with feet, about 15 bus depending on traffic, with the station at the bottom of my home.

Life surely more urban, vibrant, waiting for me here. Yet he will have to adapt to life in Cantonese. Unpredictable weather now, it speaks Cantonese everywhere (well fortunately Mandarin goes well, phew ..), and surely other things that await me in the corner!

Soon for the rest!

Guangzhou power

After several days of radio silence, I take contact with the web! And attention not from Shanghai, but since my new city: Canton! Guangzhou or for the purists

Since the last post, a lot of news! And not least, it is done moving Shanghai – Canton is indeed realized. It’s been a week now that I got, and I’ve just moved into my new apartment! Meanwhile I was at the hotel (without an internet connection, hence the radio silence), and especially I started my new life as a non-student. That’s it I came on with a bang in life! as they say, this kind student is inactive … New business, new town, new home, and even a new mobile phone number (so that it is cheaper, better to take a local number).

I just starting to get my bearings. I have not really had time to go around Canton, just my neighborhood, between my office and my new home. So voili voilou the first photos of Canton! Tianhe District, including the Citic, xin zhong 中 新 as they say here, THE financial and commercial center of Guangzhou.

Here we go, we share the intersection of Guangzhou Dadao 广州 大道 for up Tianhe Beilu 天河 北路, the artery of the new financial and commercial district of Tianhe 天河 区 that.
